H50: Types of
Coloured Material> It is possible to identify three
different types of coloured materials based on structure.
(1) Homogeneous materials such as conventional paints, opaque plastics
and dyed textile fabrics.
(2) Layered materials such as two-layer automotive coatings and
surface-printed non-absorbent substrates.
(3) Heterogeneous materials such as stained wood and newsprint.

H51:
Gloss Perception and Measurement> Gloss or glossiness
is an aspect of appearance that we all recognise and the degree of
glossiness is described by phrases such as high gloss finish, gloss
finish and matt Finish. The human visual system takes account of
several types of appearance characteristics simultaneously and
integrates them into a single estimate of glossiness. Three major
characteristics of gloss are distinctness-of-image gloss, specular
gloss and contrast gloss. |

H52: Pigmented
Materials; Light Absorption and Particle Size>
The relationships between the optical properties of a pigmented
material and the optical properties of the individual pigment particles
are explored. The colour obtained is dependent on the size of the
pigment particles and how well the pigment particles are dispersed
within the coating. The absorption properties of a single particle and
the concept of "absorption efficiency" is introduced. |
